BRADY, Maziere (1796-1871: DIB)
He was born on 20 July 1796 at Dublin, the second son of Francis Tempest Brady, a gold and silver smith, and his wife Martha Hodgson. He entered Trinity College Dublin in 1812 and earned his BA in 1816 and his MA in 1819. He was twice awarded the vice-chancellor’s prize for English poetry. He entered the Middle Temple on 22 Nov. 1816 and was called to the Irish bar in 1819. He married Eliza Anne Buchanan on 26 July 1823; they had two sons and three daughters. His first wife died in 1858 and on 15 Dec. 1860 he married Mary Hatchell. His career progressed steadily to the highest levels: he was appointed solicitor-general in 1837, attorney-general in 1839, chief baron of the court of exchequer in 1840, to the bench of the court of chancery in 1846, and lord chancellor of Ireland 1846-52, 1853-58, and 1859-66. He became the first vice-chancellor of the Queen’s University of Ireland in 1850. In 1869 he was made a baronet. He had wide-ranging interests and was prominent among those who successfully promoted the establishment of the National Gallery of Ireland. After a year of declining health, he died on 13 Apr. 1871 at his home in Upper Pembroke Street, Dublin, and was interred in the family vault in Mount Jerome cemetery.
