Biography:

BRACKENBURY, Joseph (1787-1864: ODNB)

He was born on 27 Sept. 1787 in Langton by Partney, Lincolnshire, the third son of the Rev. William Brackenbury (d 1824) and his wife Juliet Langton (d 1790). He matriculated at Bene’t College (now Corpus Christi) at the University of Cambridge in 1806 (BA 1811, MA 1819). He was ordained a deacon in 1810 and priest in 1812. On 11 Dec. 1810 he married Mary Brackenbury of Aswardby, Lincolnshire; they had four sons and three daughters Although accounts vary, he served as chaplain to the EIC’s Madras establishment from about 1813-18 before returning to England where he was appointed chaplain to the Magdalen Hospital in Blackfriar’s Road, London. In 1857 one of his sons, Joseph, was killed in India while serving with the 32nd regiment. In 1862 he became rector at Quendon, Essex; he died there of apoplexy on 31 Mar. 1864 and was buried on 6 Apr. The Lincolnshire Brackenburys were an extensive clan: Robert Carr Brackenbury (q.v.) subscribed to Natale Solum and Joseph Brackenbury was a subscriber to Frances Brackenbury Bousfield’s Admonitory Rhymes.
