BLACK, John (1753-1813: ancestry.co.uk)
pseudonym Sappho Search
He is not to be confused with John Black (q.v.), author of The Falls of Clyde. Black was born at Guthrie, Angus, Scotland, on 9 Sept. 1753 and baptised on 13 Sept.; his parents were James Black and his wife Barbara Keird. Nothing is known about his education but likely he attended a Scottish university. On 28 May 1776 at St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, he married May Logie; they had eleven children but just five survived their father. He was ordained deacon in London in 1777 and priest in 1783. Thereafter he served as curate at Little Bealings 1783-89, perpetual curate at Butley 1789-1813, and Ramsholt 1807-13. The family lived at Woodbridge, Suffolk. He died at Woodbridge on 30 Aug. 1813. Other publications include sermons, and he was recognised for his classical scholarship.
