Biography:
BLACK, John (1777-1825: DWS)
Author of The Falls of Clyde, he is not to be confused with the Rev. John Black of Butley whose works were mainly published in England. He was born at Douglas, Lanarkshire, to George Black and Mary (Inglis) Black, and educated at the University of Glasgow. He tutored Patrick Fraser Tytler, son of Lord Woodhouselee, before being appointed to the parish of Colyton, Ayrshire. His 1810 two-volume Life of Torquato Tasso (Edinburgh) was well received.
