Biography:

BIRNIE, Moses (c. 1785-1866: ancestry.co.uk)

The son of Moses Birnie, a merchant, and his wife Hellen Davidson, he was born probably in about 1785 at Aberdeen where he lived all his life. He was a classmate of Lord Byron (q.v.) at Mr. Bower's school in Longacre and afterwards trained to be a surgeon. On 24 Aug. 1811 he married Sarah Morison; they had children but no details have been located. Aside from poetry, he was interested in agriculture and theology: his other publications are A Series of Experiments in Agriculture (1829), Time and the Things of Time (a poem, 1850), and St. Paul at Athens: a Poem (1852). He retired from work in 1858 and lived in Old Aberdeen where he died. Birnie was buried in Old Machar churchyard, Aberdeenshire, on 4 June 1866. (BBA; ancestry.co.uk 4 Jan. 2021, 26 Dec. 2024) SR
