Author: Beverley, Charlotte

Biography:

BEVERLEY, Charlotte (b 1768: ancestry.co.uk)

The only Charlotte Beverley who fits by date and place was born on 27 Feb. and baptised on 23 Mar. 1768 at Bowl Alley Lane Chapel, Kingston-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire. Her father was a dissenting minister, John Beverley (d 1812), but the name of her mother is not known. John Beverley died in 1812 but none of the obituaries mentions a wife and children. Nevertheless, at least five of his children were baptised at Bowl Alley Lane Chapel. Reading Charlotte Beverley’s poems for clues to her biography can be misleading. The title page states that the verse was “composed and selected” by her; although no other authors’ names are given in the book, at least some of the poems were not written by Beverley—including “To the Memory of the Best of Brothers” about Captain John Auriol Drummond (d 1780). No other information has been found that can be linked to Charlotte Beverley with any certainty. (ancestry.co.uk 8 Feb. 2023; Surman Index 8 Feb. 2023) SR
