Biography:

BERGUER, Lionel Thomas (1788-1833: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born at Saint Paul’s Walden, Hertfordshire, to the Rev. David Berguer, a Swiss clergyman, and his wife Elizabeth Bever. They had married in Kimpton, Hertford, on 21 Aug. 1786 and their son was baptised on 1 Apr. 1788. He attended Eton and matriculated at St. Mary's Hall, Oxford, on 10 Dec. 1810. He was ordained deacon in June 1819 but never became a priest. He is next heard of as a bookseller in London. His links with Scotland are unclear but he corresponded with Walter Scott. In 1819 he published three political pamphlets expressing his ardent support for Queen Caroline. His major achievement was to edit the 45 volumes of British Essayists (1823); his other publication is a translation of Alfieri’s Philip, King of Spain (1809). His publishing business suffered financial losses and bankruptcy 1830-32. He married Mary Ann Bowser Adams in St. Bride's, Fleet Street, London, on 15 Sept. 1832 but he died soon after and was buried in a cemetery in Hackney on 18 Jan. 1833.
