BERCHOUX, Joseph (1760-1838: Wikipedia)
The son of François de Berchoux, a government lawyer, and his wife Philiberte de Chavanne, he was born on 3 Nov. 1760 in Saint-Symphorien de Lay, near Lyon in France, and baptised on 4 Nov. He was educated in Lyon before moving to Paris where he began publishing poetry. His Gastronomie (1801) is credited by the OED as being the first instance of the word “gastronomy.” He retired to Marcigny where he died on 17 Dec. 1738. The English translator of Gastronomie is unknown; his preface states that the translation “was the employment of a few solitary evenings, during the severe illness of a near and dear relative.” (Wikipedia 5 Apr. 2023; Worldcat; OED) HJ
