Author: Benton, William Henry

Biography:

BENTON, William Henry (1793-1855?: ancestry.com)

Information about this Mississippi author is scarce: the only certain facts are that after contributing occasionally to a short-lived New York literary magazine, The Minerva (1822-5), he published his only book in Natchez MS in 1824. The Minerva carried a synopsis of the unpublished poem, including lengthy extracts, in 1822, and described the anonymous author as someone known to the editors. It seems more than likely that he was the William H. Benton, born in CT about 1793, who is recorded in the US Census of 1850 as 57 years old, living with a wife and three daughters in Warren MS, and who died in 1855.
