Author: Bentley, William
Biography:
BENTLEY, William (fl 1800-28)
No biographical records have been located. Rome in an Uproar adopts the title of a popular anonymous seventeenth-century broadside ballad, Rome's in an Uproar, or, The Pope's Bulls broughtt to the Waiting-Stake by Old Father Petres (1689)--but adds other pieces on similar anti-Catholic themes, in verse and prose. The two later Scottish editions, with variant titles, may be unauthorized reprints. The NUC entry for Bentley's work identifies the author as William Bentley (1759-1819), an American clergyman and scholar. This is almost certainly an error. (WorldCat; ESTC) HJ
