Biography:

BENTLEY, John (1752-1835: ancestry.co.uk)

John Bentley had a short but intense writing career, producing four works on religious themes in two years: The Redeemer (1802), The Royal Penitent, a Sacred Drama (1803), The Divine Logos (1803, 2nd edn 1805), and The Sacred Tree (1804). Likely he also published in periodicals. Apart from his birth and death, the details of his life lack corroboration. He was born at Derby, Derbyshire, on 22 Oct. 1752, the son of Nathaniel Bentley and his wife Elizabeth Crompton. In 1781 or 1782 (no record has been found) he married Mary Harrison in Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire; it is not known if they had children. At the time of the marriage Bentley was living in London. Bentley died at Highbury Grange on 4 Sept. 1835. (ancestry.co.uk 31 May 2023; GM [1835], 555) SR
