BENTLEY, C. C. (1803-35: ancestry.co.uk)

C. C. Bentley is here for the first time identified as Catherine Campbell Bentley. She was baptised as Katherine Campbell at Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire, on 10 July 1803. The baptismal register records her as "B. B.", that is "base born." She was the daughter of Elizabeth Campbell (1776-1836) but her father must  have acknowledged her; he is identified in the register as John Bentley, Surgeon. (He may have been the Mr. Bentley of Liverpool who subscribed for three copies of her one book.) Her book was dedicated by permission to Lady Charlotte Denison who subscribed for five copies. Many of the subscribers are in Nottinghamshire; several subscribers are in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, and it is evident that she was very well-connected.  T. S. Surr (q.v.) was a subscriber. She died at Gringley on the Hill, Nottinghamshire, and was buried on 16 Feb. 1835 at All Saints, Sutton on Trent. Her will, written on 11 May 1828 and proved on 1 Dec. 1835, left her estate including real estate to her mother. (ancestry.co.uk 24 May 2026; findmypast.co.uk 24 May 2026; baptism from AA) SR
