Biography:

BENNOCH, William (1802-82: ancestry.co.uk)

His father’s surname is given as Bennoch, but at some time the family name was changed to Bennet and William used both names. Although no birth or baptismal record has been located, he was born at Glencairn, Dumfriesshire, and was apprenticed to a mechanic. After the publication of his 1822 volume of poetry, he began to write for periodicals in Dumfries. He became editor of the liberal Glasgow Free Press in 1826; from 1832-33 he published Bennet’s Glasgow Magazine. On 13 July 1830 he married Helen Morris at Glasgow; the 1851 Census records them living in the parish of Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, with six children. By 1871 they were in Bruntisland, Fife, and he identified himself as a retired publisher. He died on 3 June 1882 and was buried in St. Columba's churchyard, Bruntisland; he left an estate of under £206. His other writings are Traits of Scottish Life, and Pictures of Scenes and Character (1830) and two books of poetry: The Prodigal Son (1836) and The Chief of Glen-Orchay (1840).
