BENNOCH, William (1802-82: ancestry.co.uk)
His father’s surname is given as Bennoch, but at some time the family name was changed to Bennet and William used both names. He was born at Glencairn, Dumfriesshire, and was apprenticed to a mechanic. After the publication of his 1822 volume of poetry, he began to write for periodicals in Dumfries. He became editor of the liberal Glasgow Free Press in 1826; from 1832-33 he published Bennet’s Glasgow Magazine. He also lived in Ireland and London. His other writings are Traits of Scottish Life, and Pictures of Scenes and Character (1830) and two books of poetry: The Prodigal Son (1836) and The Chief of Glen-Orchay (1840).
