Biography:

BENNETT, Richard (fl 1820-28)

The title page of his one book of verse identifies him as of Carlisle House school in Lambeth. This was located in Carlisle Lane by Lambeth Palace but the school was pulled down in 1828 to make way for new buildings. It is possible that Richard Bennett moved to become a teacher at nearby Kennington House School. A 14 July 1828 death notice for Mary Bennett describes her as the wife of Richard Bennett of Kennington House School and daughter of John Potenger (or Pottinger) of Jamaica; she died, aged 36, on 10 July leaving “a large family.” No birth, marriage, or death records have been located. John Potenger owned the Bonne Ville estate in Jamaica; he had died by 1809 and his wife Mary inherited the estate. (Morning Herald 14 July 1828; LBS; GM 25 [1828], 359) SR
