Biography:
BENNETT, Joseph William (1811-83: ancestry.com)
He was born and died in New Haven; he appears never to have married. His parents were Joseph W. Bennett and Emilia (Lyon) Bennett. The 1850 US Federal Census shows him sharing a house with his mother and presumably an older aunt, Elizabeth Lyon; in 1870, when his occupation is listed as "Author," the only other occupants were servants. He was one of the editors of the New-Havener weekly magazine 1835-8. Although he does not appear to have attended Yale as a student, the Yale archives contain letters by him and the fragmentary MS of a poem, "Lavinia, Canto Two" dated 1831.
