Biography:

BENJAMIN, Park (1809-64: WBIS)

He was born in Demerara, British Guiana, to Park and Mary Judith (Gall) Benjamin, but in 1813 he was sent to live with relatives in Norwich CT. He entered Harvard in 1825 and after an illness transferred to Washington (now Trinity) College in Hartford, graduating in 1829. He then studied law at Harvard and Yale and was called to the bar; he eventually made his name, however, as an editor and publisher, notably with the weekly New World--an important distributor of contemporary fiction--from 1840 to 1845. He married Mary B. Western in 1848; they had eight children. No collected edition of his poems appeared until 1948. (ANBO 25 Nov. 2017; Hart) HJ
