Biography:
BAXTER, John (1790-1830: ancestry.co.uk)
It is known from the title pages of his works that he was a schoolmaster in Barksland (i.e. Barkisland), near Halifax, Yorkshire, but his birth, baptism and parentage cannot yet be established with any certainty. His death notice states that he died on 1 May 1830 and was Master of the Free Grammar School at Barkisland from 1807 to 1830. In addition to the work listed here he published The Young Christian’s Cyclopaedia . . . Intended as a Class-Book at School(1818). He married Harriet Preston (1792-1858) on 4 Jan. 1821 at St. John the Baptist, Halifax. She was the daughter of the heiress Ellen Waterhouse and the niece of Samuel Waterhouse, of Sapling Grove. Harriet Baxter had several children. John Baxter died intestate, aged 40, leaving land and property to his eldest son, William Waterhouse Baxter (1824-55), who in 1852 donated an acre of land, School Close, for a church (Christ Church, Barkisland) and clergyman’s house to be built. Harriet Baxter died in 1858. (ancestry.co.uk 29 Oct. 2022; findmypast.co.uk 29 Oct. 2022; Leeds Intelligencer 8 Jan. 1821; Leeds Patriot 8 May 1830) AA
