Biography:

BATTY, William (c. 1714-87: ancestry.co.uk)

The first-born son of Egidius (Gyles or Giles) Batty (1682-1764) of Newby Cote, Yorkshire, and his wife Maria Robinson, he was probably born in 1714. His younger brothers were Christopher Batty (q.v.) and Laurence Batty who was admitted to St. Catharine’s, Cambridge, in 1738. With Christopher he became a follower of Benjamin Ingham and, when Ingham’s connexion became a separate denomination in 1756, William was appointed as one of two assistants to Ingham. He was ordained a pastor in the church in 1760. In 1786 he suffered from fainting spells but he ignored medical advice to cease preaching; he died suddenly on 12 Dec. 1787 “without a sigh or a groan.” (ODNB [for Benjamin Ingham]; ancestry.co.uk 30 May 2023; A.
