He was baptised on 20 Sept. 1755 in Wigan, Lancashire, the son of Jacob Bates and his wife Elizabeth Scoles who had married in Wigan on 1 Sept. 1754. His mother died in 1757. Nothing more is known of him before his marriage at St. James, Clerkenwell, London, to Mary Farrar on 11 Jan. 1798. John and Mary Bates moved to Holyhead, Anglesey, where they had numerous children before Mary’s death in 1821. John Bates died in Holyhead and was buried on 4 July 1835. In addition to the works listed in the database, his Serio-Comic, Anti-Cholera Poem identifies him as the author of “Sailor’s Progress” but this work has not been traced.
