BASSETT, William (1789-1838: ancestry.co.uk)
He was born on 3 Aug. 1789, at Acton, Suffolk, the son of Rev. William Bassett and his wife Ann Chinery, who had married in 1787. He was educated at schools in Boxford, Lavenham, and Bury St. Edmunds. He then entered Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (matric. 1809, BA 1813, MA 1817). He was ordained deacon (1814) and priest (1815) in the Church of England and became stipendiary curate at Brandon, Suffolk, in 1814 and remained there until his death. He married Martha Brewster on 18 Nov. 1815 at Brandon. They had at least ten children. He died on 20 Sept. 1838 at Nether Hall, Thurston (which he had inherited from his uncle, George Chinery, in 1807), and was buried on 25 Sept. at St. Peter’s, Thurston. His widow, Martha Bassett, remained at Nether Hall and died there in 1865. The volume listed here was printed at Bury St. Edmunds but published and sold in London by Hatchard and Son, Piccadilly. He had earlier published A Series of Sermons (1822) on the Book of Genesis, also with Hatchard and Son.
