Biography:
BARTON, Robert Cutts (1788-1827: ancestry.co.uk)
He was baptised on 21 Aug. 1788 at Northam, Devon, the eldest son of Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Robert Barton, RN (1753-1831), of Borough House, and his wife Anna Maria Downe (1766-1831), who had married in 1786. Nothing is known of his early education but he followed his father into the Royal Navy. He initially served as midshipman on HMS Amphion but joined HMS Victory off the coast at Toulon on 31 July 1803 and served at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 Oct. 1805. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1806 and was appointed Commander of HMS Calypso on 12 Aug. 1819. He married Rebecca Lopes Franco on 28 June 1820 at St. David, Exeter. She came from a distinguished family of Sephardic origins, being the sister of Sir Ralph Franco, MP, and niece of Sir Mannasseh Masseh Lopes, MP, of Maristow House, near Plymouth. They had three children. He died on 23 Oct. 1827 at Bideford, Devon, and was buried at Salisbury Cathedral with a monumental stone and inscription. Rebecca Barton died on 3 May 1853 at Upper Brook Street, Westminster, London.
