Author: Barnes, John

Biography:

BARNES, John (b c. 1793)

The title page of his Essay on Fate gives his age as fourteen, which indicates a probable birth year of 1793. If he was born in Winchester—where his books were published—he may have been the son of William Barnes, brewer, and Mary Payne Chubb who were married in Winchester on 9 Apr. 1788. Their son, John, was baptised on 26 Sept. 1793. They had another son, Richard, who died in 1859. However, no other public records or newspaper announcements have been located for John Barnes. Reviews of Essay on Fate were encouraging and, given the absence of any later publications, it is possible that he died young. (ancestry.co.uk 21 Nov. 2022) SR
