BALLOU, Silas (1753-1837: ancestry.com)
Born in Cumberland RI, married Hannah Hilton in 1774 (one daughter, Susanna), died in Richmond NH. Ballou was for a time a privateersman in the Navy. His New Hymns is significant as the first American Universalist hymn book. Benson calls him "an argumentative rhymer." (ancestry.com 5 Nov. 2017; Benson)
