Author: Baldwin, Lewis

Biography:

BALDWIN, Lewis (c. 1789-1823: ancestry.com)

Baldwin died in Philadelphia on 16 May 1823, aged 33. Because he died intestate, the probate records are fairly detailed. His widow, Ann, was one of the executors for the estate, with personal goods valued at $116.75. In the Census of 1820 it appears that the two of them lived with one other adult family member and two children, but no slaves or servants. He had been the Principal of a seminary for young ladies in Philadelphia. Judging by his other (prose) publications--The Biblical Interrogator (1816) and A Candid Development of Facts [in a Baptist dispute] (1819)--he was an active member of the First Baptist Church though not a minister himself. He was buried in the Universalist cemetery. His background is obscure; at least one Ancestry family tree makes him a native of Delaware.
