BAKER, Samuel W. (1785-1859: ancestry.com)

Baker was a native of Maine, born in Readfield, Kennebec County, on 17 Apr. 1785. The names of his parents are not known. He married Hannah Parker at Bluehill ME on 1 Dec. 1808 and they went on to have seven children, at least one of whom died in infancy. In 1813 he enlisted and served three months in the US army, fighting in Massachusetts; as his widow, Hannah was later able to claim a pension. Baker became a preacher, for the Baptists in Thomaston and for the Universalists in Dexter ME. Besides his poem he published two religious pamphlets in Boston (1813) and Hallowell ME (1814). The family had settled in Dexter ME by 1810, but in his final years Baker worked as an itinerant labourer and missionary at large, and he died in Rockland ME on 10 May 1859.
