Biography:
BAKER, John (1800?-1851: ancestry.co.uk)
Details about his birth, parents, and education have not been discovered but he became co-proprietor with Edward Hill Creasy (d 1844) of the Brighton Gazette in Jan. 1824. They operated a publishing firm as Creasy and Baker. On 9 Apr. 1840 he married Creasy’s sister, Charlotte Caroline Creasy; the 1851 Census shows them living with two servants but no children at 5 Richmond Terrace, Kingston, Sussex. A brief obituary in The Sussex Advertiser gives the date of his death as 31 Aug. 1851 and states that he suffered from illness for many years. It also praises him for his “sincere political convictions” although these were opposed to those of the Advertiser. He died in his 51st year and so was probably born in 1800; this is confirmed by the burial record for 5 Sept. 1851. (ancestry.co.uk 10 Nov. 2022; Sussex Advertiser 2 Sept. 1851) SR
