BAIN, Donald (1786-1865: DWS)
He was born at Fordyce, Banffshire, to Donald Bain and Isabel (Sim) Bain and baptised on 14 Dec. 1786. According to a ms note on the title page of The Patriot, he was a clerk in the Edinburgh bank of Sir William Forbes and his 1853 application to the RLF describes him as a judicial accountant in Edinburgh. He published Ireland: Its Wants and Capabilities in 1836. In 1841 (second edition 1845) he published a comedy, Olden Times, or, The Rising of the Sessions. No record of his marriage has been located but in his RLF application he stated that he was widowed in 1846; there was one child, a daughter. At the time of his application, he was in severe financial distress and the file includes a warrant whereby his furniture, including his bed, was taken away to pay his debt of £1. 2s. 5d.
