Biography:

BAILEY, Mary (1786-1828: death notice)

The wife of a tailor in Nottingham, she had given birth to their ninth child six weeks before her death of what sounds like pneumonia contracted when she went out to write a letter for another poor woman. The family did not have the money to pay for medical help, and Mrs. Bailey's patrons did not know she was ill. With an education above the norm for her class, she had been a ladies' maid in a titled family before her marriage. When her husband fell ill in 1826, she published two subscription editions of poetry to tide them over. (Death notice, Nottingham Review and General Advertiser 29 Aug. 1828; Rowena Edlin-White, Exploring Nottinghamshire Writers [2017], 8-9) HJ
