Biography:
BAGNALL, Edward (1808-36: ancestry.co.uk)
He was born 11 Oct. 1808, the eldest son of Edward Bagnall and his wife Mary (Hinton?). He appears to have been baptised twice, first in the Wesleyan Chapel and then in the established church at St. Lawrence, Darlaston, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, on 15 Apr. 1825 (BA 1829, MA 1831). He then entered the established church and was curate at the small parishes near Birmingham, Nether Whitacre (1832-4) and then Over Whitacre from 1834 until his death. As with many deeply religious people the lure and power of Byron was surprisingly strong and Lord Byron (1831) contrasts sharply with the poem published shortly before his death, Saul and David, A Sacred Dramatic Poem (1836). He died at the parsonage, Over Whitacre, where he was curate, on 11 Jun. 1836. (ancestry.co.uk 21 Jun. 2021; CCEd 20 Jun. 2021; Oxford University and City Herald 25 June 1836; GM Aug. 1836, 219) AA
