AVERY, Sarah (1753-1801: ancestry.co.uk)
She was born on 23 Dec. 1753 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, the daughter of John Harlowin [and variants] Avery and his wife Faith Grubham, both from Lyme Regis but married at Kilmington, Devon (about seven miles away), on 20 Apr 1747. Her father, a constable, died in 1782 and her mother in 1785. According to her obituary, written by the local vicar, the Rev. James Wheaton, she suffered for 40 years from unspecified pain. She died in Lyme Regis on the morning of Friday, 28 Aug. 1801, after a five-day illness, and was buried two days later with her age given as 47. Her Divine Hymns (1795) consists of 23 hymns but never gained wide currency.
