ATWOOD, Henry Adams Sergison (1800-77: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born on 13 Jan. 1800 and baptised at St. Margaret, Westminster, London, on 4 June, the son of Thomas Alexander Atwood, curate at that church, and his wife Grace Burtenshaw.  His father died on 19 July 1805. He studied at Queen’s College, Oxford (matric. 10 Dec. 1817, BA 1822, MA 1824) and was ordained a deacon in 1823 and a priest in 1824. He served as curate in Banbury, Oxfordshire; Kenilworth, Warwickshire; and Mickleton, Gloucestershire. In Sept. 1839 he became vicar at Ashelworth, Gloucester, and remained there until his death. He married Cunitia Evans in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, on 15 July 1824; they had four children. She died on 8 Jan. 1855 and in 1856 he married Ann Burtenshaw who was probably a cousin. Atwood had an interest in astronomy and became a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1827. In 1860 he was part of an expedition on board HMS Himalaya to observe the total eclipse of the sun from Spain. He died at home on 27 June 1877 and was buried in the cemetery at St. Mary’s, Hasfield, Tewkesbury. He also wrote Hymns for Private or Congregational Use, for Every Sunday (1837).
