Biography:

ATKINS, John (1812-40?: ancestry.co.uk)

O’Donoghue identifies him as born in Cork and speculates that he was the John R. Atkins who graduated from TCD in 1831 but no certain records have been located. He may have been the John Bennet Robert Atkins, younger son of Robert Atkins of Firville, Cork, and his wife Charlotte Going. If so, he was born on 30 Oct. 1812 and was appointed curate at Mallow, County Cork, on 30 Oct. 1837. He died unmarried at Firville in 1840. Although Thomas Davis, poet and Irish patriot, was connected to Atkins’s family through his mother, John Atkins was not his uncle as O’Donoghue claims.
