Biography:

ATKINS, James (1750-1819: ancestry.co.uk)

His surname is sometimes given at Atkyns. He was baptised on 22 Feb. 1750 in Rolleston, Staffordshire; his parents were Thomas Atkins and his wife Elisabeth Wignal. He attended Repton School in Derbyshire before going to Magdalene College, Cambridge (matric. 16 Apr. 1770, BA 1774, MA 1777). He excelled in the Magdalene Mathematical Tripos. He was ordained in 1776 and served as rector of St. Michael’s, Long Stanton, Cambridgeshire, from 1789 until his death. He did not marry. He had an interest in astronomy and also wrote A Treatise on the Horizontal Sun and Moon (1793). The only other information that has been found is a record of his opposition in 1813 to the enactment of the Inclosure Act at Long Stanton.
