Biography:

ARMSTRONG, Henry William Gleed (1804-72: ancestry.co.uk)

The exact date of his birth is not known but he was baptised on 1 Jan. 1805 at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. His parents were the Rev. William Archbold Armstrong, curate of Cheshunt, and his wife Charlotte Eleanor Mary Hassell; they had married in London on 2 May 1796. He studied at St. John’s College, Oxford (matric. 25 Feb. 1823, BA 1828, MA 1829), and was ordained a deacon in 1828 and a priest in 1829. On 30 July 1829 he married Lucy Alpe in Norwich; they had three daughters and one son. He served as a curate in Cropredy, Oxfordshire, and Tottenham, North London; the 1851 Census identifies him as the assistant priest of St. Peter’s in the parish of St. Andrew’s, Holborn. He was vicar of Willesden, Middlesex, 1854-63 and of Bierton, Buckinghamshire, 1863 until his death on 19 June 1877. His only other publication is a sermon, The Man of Sin (1850).
