ANSELL, Thomas (1791-1876: ancestry.co.uk)
Confirmation is wanting but he was almost certainly the Thomas Ansell, son of William and Letitia Ansell of Wantage, Berkshire, who was born on 4 Aug. 1791. His father was a prosperous tanner in Wantage; his mother’s surname at birth is not known. Thomas Ansell studied at Wadham College, Oxford (matric. 13 July 1808, BA 1812, MA 1815), and was ordained a deacon in 1814. He served as a curate at West Hendren, Berkshire, and Pamber, Hampshire, before becoming chaplain at Beaminster Union (that is, the workhouses). On 15 Aug. 1829 he married Sarah Bance of Hungerford, Berkshire; records have been located for two daughters but possibly there were more children. In 1833 he advertised a school, Bridport Classical and Mathematical Academy, but no other information has been found. The 1851 Census identifies him as a widower and in 1861 he was living with an unmarried daughter, Ellen. He died at Stoke Abbot, Dorset, on 15 July 1876 and was buried on 18 July. He seems to have written no other published works. (ancestry.co.uk 11 May 2022; CCEd 11 May 2022; Alumni Oxonienses; Dorset County Chronicle 11 July 1833; John Bull 29 July 1876)
