Biography:

ANKETELL, John (c. 1751-1832: ancestry.co.uk)

The son of Roger Anketell of Dernamuck, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, and his wife Rhoda Foster, he was probably born in 1751. He was educated at the Royal School in Armagh and, from 1768, at Trinity College Dublin (BA 1773). He became a priest in 1775 and was appointed to curacies in Co. Tyrone. In early Aug. 1781 he married Ann Stevenson of Stewartstown, Co. Tyrone; they had two sons. The title page of his Poems on Several Subjects identifies Anketell as the curate of Donaghenry, Co. Tyrone. The book is dedicated to James Stewart of Killymoon who was MP for Tyrone. It includes an extensive list of subscribers from across Ireland; one subscriber is Anketell’s younger brother, Thomas, who lived in Dominica where he edited The Charibbean [sic] Register. The Preface to Poems details the composition of each of the verses and explains the grounds for Anketell’s belief he was overlooked for preferment in the church. It also refers to a play he had written for the benefit of a theatrical performer and which was produced in Dublin; no trace of the play has been located. Anketell died at Stewartstown on 15 Sept. 1832.
