Biography:

ANEIRIN (fl. 575-600 AD: ODNB)

A poet who sang in Welsh, he was associated with Manaw Gododdin, a British kingdom located in what is now NE England and SE Scotland. The poem is about the Battle of Catraeth which is known from no other source. The translator, William Probert (1790-1870), was born in Wales and became a Wesleyan Methodist minister. While serving in Alnwick he converted to Unitarianism and served as minister at the Unitarian Chapel. His translation is dedicated to Sir W. W. Wynne and was published by subscription.
