Biography:

ANDERSON, Edward (1764-1843: ancestry.co.uk)

The son of a small-holding farmer, Robert Anderson, and his wife, Elizabeth Robson, he was born at Weaverthorpe, Yorkshire. He had limited education and when he was nine the family moved to Broach Dale where he worked as a shepherd. Following a mishap when fourteen of the sheep died, Anderson’s father urged him to take up another trade and he became a sailor with the Lisbon Trading Company. His poem, which was popular and often reprinted, tells of his adventures including being shipwrecked. He rose to be captain of his own vessel, the Jemima. In 1790 he married Catharine Blanchard but she died the following year and on 25 June 1814 he married Betty Kidd with whom he had eight sons and two daughters. He was living in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, when he died on 28 Aug. 1843. He is buried in Kilham cemetery. (Goodridge; ancestry.co.uk 14 Aug. 2022) SR
