ALLSTON, Washington (1779‑1843: ANBO)

Best known as a painter. He was born in Georgetown SC to William and Rachel (Moore) Allston and graduated from Harvard in 1800, having been class poet. The poetry listed here is his only  published literary work. Between 1801 and 1808, Allston studied painting at the Royal Academy in London and then continued his studies by travelling in France and Italy. In Rome in 1804 he made the acquaintance of S. T. Coleridge, initiating a friendship that was important to both their careers. In Boston in June 1809 he married Ann Channing (d 1815), who accompanied him on his return to Europe. The marriage was childless. From 1811 to 1818 he painted and exhibited in London, returning to the United States in 1818. He married Martha Remington Dana (1784-1862) in Cambridge MA on 1 June 1830.
