Biography:
ALLINE, Henry (1748-84: NUC)
Evangelist, hymn-writer, and theologian. He was born in Newport RI to William and Rebecca (Clark) Alline, and moved with his family to Falmouth NS when he was twelve. Although he received little formal education, he was ordained in 1779 and became a successful itinerant preacher. His interest in the use of song in worship led to hymn-writing: his Hymns and Spiritual Songs includes 467 original hymns. He was a leader of the Great Awakening in Nova Scotia. Benson, who describes him as "a fiery evangelist . . . and a great disturber of church relationships," classifies him as a Free Will Baptist. (DCB 29 Aug. 2017; Benson) HJ
