Biography:

ALLIBOND, John (1596/7-1658: ODNB)

Allibond is a prior author whose anonymous major work, Rustica Academiae Oxonienses, dates from 1648 but was translated and reprinted several times in the eighteenth century and again in 1834 (under the title given in the database). Allibond was born at Chenies, Buckinghamshire; his father was Peter Allibond, rector of Chenies, and his mother may have been Margaret Balham (Peter Allibond’s wife at the time of his death in 1629). He studied at Magdalen College, Oxford (matric. 7 June 1616, BA 1616, MA 1619) before serving as Master of Magdalen Grammar School (1625-32). He was rector at St. Mary-de-Crypt (1634-38) and perpetual curate at St. Nicholas (1635-45), both in Gloucester. In 1636 he was made rector of Broadwell with Adlestrop, Gloucestershire; he held that post until his death in 1658. In 1643 he was awarded the degree of DD. Rustica Academiae Oxonienses is a satire on a Puritan parliamentary visitation to Oxford.  (ODNB 5 May 2022)
