Biography:

ALLEY, Jerome (1758-1827: ancestry.co.uk)

The son of George Alley and his wife Cecilia Ashton, he was baptised as Jeremiah Alley at the Church of Ireland church of St. Kevin and St. Peter in Dublin on 14 Jan. 1758. He earned his BA from Trinity College Dublin in 1781 and his LLB in 1784. In about 1781 he married Mary Holroyd, a relation of Lord Sheffield for whom Alley afterwards served as chaplain. They had one son who was a naval captain and died in 1818 at Penang. Mary died when the son was born, and in 1783 Alley married Lady Catherine (Moore) Waller, widow of Sir Robert Waller. They had two sons; the eldest, Jerome, was also a clergyman and had a distinguished career in New Brunswick. Alley served as rector of St. Brigid's church in Beaulieu and Drumcar, Louth, for thirty-seven years, and he was a member of the Royal Irish Academy. He died at home on 21 May 1827, survived by his wife, and was buried in St. Brigid’s churchyard, Beaulieu, Drogheda. His other publications include: Historical Essay on the Lives of Augustus Caesar (1781), Observations on the Government and Constitution of Great Britain (1792), A Review of the Political Principles of the Modern Whigs (1792), A Vindication of the Statements and Principles Advanced in the Strictures of Lord Sheffield (1806), and Vindiciae Christianae (1826).
