Author: Allen, Paul
Biography:
ALLEN, Paul (1775-1826: ANBO)
The son of Paul Allen Sr., an RI state representative, and Polly (Cooke) Allen, he was born in Providence RI. He graduated from Brown University (then RI College) in 1793, having shown promise as a public speaker. He trained in law but never practised, becoming variously a journalist, a newspaper editor, and a biographer. He left a trail of unfinished projects but did lay the ground for later work, notably with his abandoned biography of Charles Brockden Brown (1771-1810) and his history of the American Revolution which was completed by others. His poem Noah includes an attack on slavery. At the time of his death on 18 Aug. 1826 at Baltimore, he was unmarried and was employed as the editor of the Baltimore Gazette.
