Biography:
ALLEN, John (1702-74?)
This John Allen is distinguished as V.D.M., "Verbi Dei Minister" or "Servant of the Word of God"--a title sometimes found on the tombstones of Christian clergymen--since his poems were published posthumously by his son "John Allen of Streatham [NH]." Both works purport to express his dying thoughts. Another posthumous publication of his that the "editor" declared to have been in his hands "these many years" was a prose pamphlet of eight pages, A Concise Descant upon the Majesty, Excellency, and Preciousness of the Scriptures (1801), published in Windsor NH. The birth and death dates were supplied by RLIN while that system was extant, but his death might well have been closer to the 1788 date of publication. Public records for New Hampshire provide no likely matches for either father or son. (ancestry.com 6 Oct. 2025; findmypast.com 6 Oct. 2025) HJ
