Biography:

ALLEN, Elizabeth (1796-1849: Coates)

Born in Craftsbury VT, her parents having emigrated there from Brookfield MA when northern Vermont was still a wilderness. She was fond of music when young but became totally deaf at the age of fifteen. She contributed to the local newspaper using the pseudonym "Ada"; income from her book enabled her to tour the middle west in 1833.
