ALLEN, Benjamin (1789-1829: WBIS)

pseudonyms Osander; Juba

Clergyman, publisher, and author. He was born in Hudson NY; his father, also Benjamin, was a merchant. He was employed as a clerk. From 1809 to 1814 he sought instruction from various teachers and financed his studies by writing and publishing poems. In 1814 he was licensed as a lay reader in Virginia; he was ordained in 1816. In 1821 he moved to Philadelphia, becoming Rector of St. Paul's Church there, and published a number of prose works (church history, sermons, etc.). In 1828, though in failing health, he visited England to take part in the religious anniversaries of the following year, and he died during the return voyage. He had married Harriet Swift in 1812, and they had six children.  (Thomas G. Allen, Memoir [1832]; Sprague) HJ
