Biography:

ALLAN, Adam (1756-1823: ancestry.com)

He was born at Dumfries, Scotland, on 1 Mar. 1756, and baptised there on 4 Mar. His father James was a shoemaker. He enlisted with the Queen's American Rangers and fought for the British during the Revolutionary War. After the war he went on a lieutenant's half-pay, settled in New Brunswick, Canada, and served thereafter with the loyalist King's New Brunswick Rangers. On 24 Dec. 1783 he married Mary Woodbridge at Marysville NB, and they went on to have a large family. He died in Prince William parish, York county NB on 14 Oct. 1823. His New Gentle Shepherd, a translation of Allan Ramsay's (q.v.) poem into modern English, includes his own original description of the Great Falls in New Brunswick.
