Biography:

Aikin, Lucy (1781‑1864: ODNB)   

Born in Warrington, Cheshire. She was the daughter of John Aikin, MD (q.v.), and Martha (Jennings) Aikin, and a niece of Mrs. Barbauld (q.v.). Her family moved to Yarmouth when she was three years old. From 1792 to 1797 she lived in London where she was educated at home, and she then moved to Stoke Newington with her father. She contributed to periodicals from the age of seventeen, particularly to the Annual Register, and wrote biography, popular history, and books for children; she took a particular interest in the achievements and capacities of women. She lived in Hampstead from 1822 to 1844, and again from 1852 to her death. Collections of her correspondence with the American clergyman William Ellery Channing were published in 1864 and 1874.
