Biography:

AFFLECK, James (1775-1835: MSM)

The son of John Affleck and his wife Jean Watson, he was born in Drummelzier, Peebleshire, on 2 Dec. 1775 and baptised on 10 Dec. (Hunter erroneously gives the date of his birth as 8 Sept. 1776.) His surname was spelled Afleck in the baptismal record. Although his education was very limited and he worked initially as a farm labourer, he was apprenticed to a tailor in Drummelzier. In 1793 he commenced business as a master tailor in Biggar, South Lanarkshire. He married Marion Gladstones on 29 June 1799 in Drummelzier. They had a son and daughter, and the son later wrote the memoir of his father included in Posthumous Poetical Works (1836). Affleck was an ardent Freemason who composed verses for recitation to his friends. He died at Biggar.
