ADAMS, Gamaliel Zelotes (1814-71: ancestry.com)

Adams, who published as "G. Zelotes Adams," was born in Suffield CT on 21 May 1814 to Zadock and Anna (Adams) Adams. His poetry belongs mainly to his student days at boarding school in Schenectady NY and then at Washington College (later Trinity College) in Hartford CT, where he was a freshman in 1836. He became a teacher, employed in Mississippi and Arkansas. On 6 Jan. 1847 he married Lucy Catherine Agee (1826-99) at Marshall MS. The couple had eight children, four of whom however died in infancy. He retired to Benton AR before 1870 and died there on 8 Mar. 1871; he was buried at the Old Rosemont cemetery. Two substantial publications after 1835 were Love of Nature: An Anniversary Poem (1837) and Affection's Leaf (1841) and he continued to contribute occasionally to magazines until at least 1852.
